SB Activity 1.1 & 1.2 (page 6)—Activate prior knowledge by having students individually complete the graphic organizer to consider the concept of change. After students pair up, have them share their lists of changes with partners. Ask students to share a few examples with the class and record the responses for each question. Brainstorm words, phrases, and images for question 5 and have students share list. Create cover page to use in binder. Ask students to review their lists of changes and star any that may have been caused by a specific incident. Ask them to choose one of the starred items and in their writing composition book free write about the incident.

SB Activity 1.3 – Have students brainstorm words that are related to or are synonyms for change, choose a word retlated to change and model the word map or graphic organizer on page 7; have students work with a partner to complete the word map on page 7 with another word for change. Introduce the Vocabulary notebook and have students place the completed word map in their vocabulary notebooks.

EAGLE Lesson # 1 – Emotional Language. (Refer to Power Point) Briefly demonstrate how to do the homework online. Pass out noun reference sheet. Have students complete a Quick Write about their first day of seventh grade. Use Shared Reading to read the story “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto. (Purple Lit book pages 122-127 OR SB pages 330-334) Will need to finish the story tomorrow.

Interpret a poem about choices, develop vocabulary through diffusing, and understand that choices have consequences.

 

Teacher Activities

EAGLE Lesson # 3 – Grammar. (Refer to the Power Point) Have students make a Prediction about the content of the poem based on its title. Do a Shared Reading of the poem. Introduce the Diffusing strategy by having students Mark the Text highlighting or circling unfamiliar words. Discuss diction and connotation. Generate synonyms for unfamiliar words and discuss the connotation of the new words compared to the original. Do a partial TP-CASTT focusing on author’s purpose, connotation, denotation, and paraphrase.Use the Sentence Starter “The Road Not Taken” is about… to lead to a discussion of the theme of the poem. SB page 10.

Do a Shared Reading of the excerpt from Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. Do a Close Reading of the text by chunking and Marking the Text for specific purposes. SB pages 11-12 Will need to finish tomorrow.

Homework: HOT Words for the SAT: (This is what I will use the spiral notebook for). Students will write the word, part of speech, definition, and a sentence using the word properly. (I will provide this format for them the first 3 weeks. After that, they’re on their own.) There will be a quiz for these words on Friday. Pre-AP students will do all 10 words; Gen. Ed students will do the first 5.

 

Tuesday 8/20

Remind students of use of quotation marks. (2-3 mins) Read and TPCASTT “Moco Limping”. Have students define highlighted words beside the stanzas. Analyze poem for themes of forgiveness and acceptance. {If you do the writing prompt on pg. 12 after the TPCASTT, assign it for homework. Students need to get in the habit of knowing they will have homework several times a week.)

Read background info provided to contextualize the text for students; direct students to the graphic organizer and explain they will take notes while viewing the film October Sky. (5 min) (My students will be viewing the entire film instead of just the clips.)
